Kate's centenary was a magnificent occasion. It started with a procession to the village hall with a piper leading her in a chariot decorated with flowers. She wore a head garland of wild flowers - the one thing she stipulated as reminding her of birthday parties of her youth. Shortly after the family party arrived at the hall, the Lord Lieutenant's deputy delivered the telegram from the queen, heralded by the piper. It turned out two of her children had been taught by Kate, as had large numbers of people who came during the day. There was a sit-down lunch for 50 family and close friends and an hour-long musical entertainment which included 2 harp pieces specially composed for Kate, as well as some cabaret and musical burlesque. More people came to tea and for a champagne toast to the birthday girl - who only began to wilt at about 6 o'clock. A long and exciting day for a 100 year-old. There were fireworks over the Urr as the grand finale. We counted over 120 cards next day and thank all those who sent them, as well as the abundance of floral and edible tributes which Kate looked at and appreciated next day. Please consider yourselves thanked, as we are so sorry but we do not know whom to contact.
